Risk Management. Safety Policies: The Next Generation
Since WWII, numerous changes in the workplace have resulted from policies whose goals have been to increase safety. Initially, it was physical safety in an effort to cut down on accidents and injuries.
Beginning in the 1960s, a myriad of civil rights pplicies were enacted to improve the social/religious/racial/gender safety. In the 1980s and 90s, drug and alcohol, smoking, and workplace violence policies were instituted to mitigate the impact of inappropriate behaviors in the workplace. It should be noted that most of these were instituted within the last 75 years and all are a form of risk management.
Contingency plans certainly are risk management, however, most focus rather narrowly on DR/DM, infrastructure, operations and security. In recent years, the field is rapidly acknowledging that plans must include the human factor implications of a wide range of crises.
This presentation will develop this theme and the specific steps that organizations must take to move their current policies & plans to the next level in the progression toward a comprehensive contingency and
resiliency program.
